Step 5: Leaders – Multiply the Church
Four Weekly or Bi-Weekly Sessions
The Leaders Course is for those who are ready to begin leading themselves and others. This class will focus on leadership development, character development, and all of the essential topics to developing the leader that is within you. Leadership doesn’t happen by accident, and everything rises and falls on leadership. To be successful in anything, we need an understanding of leadership. This class offers high level training for those who desire to lead any ministry area, lead a Lifegroup, or any team at Champion Life. This will help empower and mature believers in winning souls, making disciples, and developing your personal leadership ability and passion.

Only the first session and I’m already liking this class. And I even learned I have a while left to go until I’m unconsciously competent in the areas I serve in at the church. Hoping this class gives me the ability to do my part and do it right.
“Your pastor loves you too much to promote you to a position of incompetency”, have been the most impactful words so far in this class. This class has set me on a mind-journey beyond what my thoughts have been, for what I believe is my future ministry.
My belief is great leadership skills aren’t needed to simply lead groups of people within the confines of church, but to lead individuals that God has put in my path in the right direction: The one God has planned for them……using me to accomplish it.
This class has helped me understand some of the major changes I’ve seen in a few people at CLC: Couples and individuals who sound and act more commited to CLC, and more compelled and excited to make a difference and to help grow the church. These are people who have taken the Leaders Class.
This class has made me aware of how I would have performed my volunteer duties differently in the past (hospitality, bookstore, nursery, and getting-started team) as far as commitment. They were always done with joy in my heart. My missionary status and mission for Bethany House in Uganda is the most commited I’ve ever been in accomplishing God’s work. I want to feel the same passion, determination, and drive in any future leadership role Pastor Eddie puts me in.
This Leaders class will mold me into an unconciously competent leader in my ministry as a fundraiser for Bethany House and other ministries, which I believe God has called me to do.
I’ve taught the ‘competence/incompetence’ theory to RV salespeople in the past as a Sales Trainer. Perhaps I’ll one day be a fill-in teacher for this class.
This class will equip me to keep from becoming stagnant in my thinking and efforts in becoming and remaining unconciously competent in all that I do to advance God’s kingdom.
Bottom line: I’M SO EXCITED TO BE IN THIS CLASS. PASTOR EDDIE’S A FABULOUS TEACHER!
When pastor started the first session of the leadership course, he started out the class against the grain. Given the name of the course, I was prepared to learn leadership principles and how they apply to the church. Instead, Pastor Eddie started out by showing us why leadership is so critical to healthy church growth. We learned that church growth is hindered not by lack of interest, funding or need but by lack of capable leaders. Pastor defined the competency gap as the difference between a leadership team’s skills & competency versus the ministry’s growth & challenges. He showed us how this gap is largest at the team member/volunteer level. This concept is pretty eye opening since most new members or the un-churched deal one-on-one with team members/volunteers most. As a result, implementing competent leaders is important for equipping front level team members. But it is even more important to continue to stretch and grow skills and competencies at all levels so church growth can be sustained effectively. I’m excited to see what our next session holds.
The first session of the leadership class in the Champion University foundations course was much more than I expected. I knew it was going to be great because of the amazing teacher Pastor Windsor. However, I was not expecting to see how vitally important the equipping of new leaders in the church organization is to the survival and growth of a healthy church. The statistics that pastor Eddie shared about the competency gap in the team member’s one a church reaches a level 5 church were astounding. To see that the team members competency at a level 5 church (2500 – 5000 members) were 12% of the necessary skills required for service was a real eye opener to how important building quality leaders at the early stages of a church is. If you build better leaders early who are capable of training others and building teams and managing people the church can grow and not lose competency. I’m guessing that’s why I’m attending this class
It was pertinent and poignant, because I grew up in a [LEVEL 3] Church that ran like a well oiled machine. But as an adult, years later I joined a local [LEVEL 1] Church that failed to grow in any way shape or form. I almost didn’t return to any Church because of what went happened. This first’s class helped me put it in perspective.
Now I am able to see that it was really due to a lack of competent leadership. It’s not their fault, but it is unfortunate. The elderly congregation had no want or desire to grow the church. They didn’t understand that by not bringing in new people or younger “able bodied” people to help; they could not meet the needs of its current members.
Mostly, they had been overcome with fear. Fear of change, fear of possible risks in growth. Fear killed the church.
This, to me, is like having a fruit tree and putting a basket over it. You can probably keep a tree alive under certain circumstances, if you care for it daily and allow light to get to it. But, all you really have is a tiny tree with tiny hard bitter fruit. No fruit, no seed, no new fruit. Eventually it will wither and die.
I often feel a twinge of guilt for leaving that church…Then I remember …God called for great things to happen in my life and I HAD to step out of the false sense of loyalty for “my old Church” and seek a true relationship with God.
I had to find people Like those I have met serving in “our Church”. This is an awesome opportunity to use my talents to grow God’s Kingdom. Maybe not directly (yet), but in some small way I help others to grow God’s Church.
God’s plan was to provide the journey where I am with people who share His Heart. Along the way I find clues and insight, each time stepping out more in faith where I find myself being guided in the RIGHT direction.
I look forward to class next week.
During the first session of the Leadership course, I couldn’t help but think back to the principles I had learned in Pastor Eddies book, Increasing Your Personal Capacity. The key components, which will make an individual competent and successful, are to compose ways of thinking which will gain competency. Gaining tools that will be needed for the next level and eliminating habits which make the next level difficult to obtain. The awareness of where a person is and where they need to be is key. Tools, which need to be obtained can only become, through the awareness of a persons incompetency. When a person’s incompetencies are identified, then the person can effectively be competent. Challenges will occur from a person’s new competency. These challenges are stepping stones, which will make the individual more effective, stronger and humble. James 1:2-5 speaks to the individual overcoming their challenges.
I believe competence and incompetence are ways people live their lives by and don‘t even realize it. It is used in everyday life. You are either the type of person that takes the initiative to think and move out of the box or you are the type of person that points the finger on everything thing else but themselves for being a person with no motivation or has too many fears to be able to move forward. Everyone has insecurities and fall short in certain part of their lives. Just with the 1st first session that we had in Leaders, was motivating and encouraging enough for me to make it my goal to become unconsciously competent. Not only will it be beneficial to want to live my life unconsciously competent but will prevent me from becoming stagnant in other areas in my life in making decisions like in my job, parenting, and managing my household. And also being the daughter, sister, mother, and aunt that God called me to be. I want to be able to do things naturally that will be pleasing to God to fulfill his destiny.
I am extremely grateful to be a part of CLC and now CU. I look forward to attending each and every time I can in anticipation of what God has in store for me. I’ve been to the first Leadership class and I’m eager for more. The statistics of the results of competency in the different levels of churches was astonishing. I hope I’m not unconsciously incompetent in any area of my life. Unfortunately I think I am consciously incompetent in some areas. I aspire to be unconsciously competent some day. I believe that CLC has many unconsciously competent people already and that’s why CLC is doing so well. Thank you for all the opportunities at CLC for me and my family to learn and grow.
After taking the first session I was stocked by the way your personal growth can effect
your church growth….. I was blown away!!!!! I never thought of it in that way before but let me tell you it was a eye opener. As we moved on in the class I found myself with a better understanding of what I can do in the church and how I can make a difference in the way am involved in the church. My walk with god has been a different from the way it is here! I was raised roman catholic with that being said “I had no knowing of god,“ just my own understanding. With all the classes at champion university is helping me to understand God , the people of god and the church which I serve.
I know we all have ups and down, its how we address the hard times and what kind of people we are going to be on the other side of it. I know out of this experience I will be on top, I mean when your working with god how can you not go up!
This is the class I’ve been waiting on!!!!!! I know why this is one of your favorite classes to teach, cause of the great tools that we can use in our every day life’s! This is just wonderful and I want more. I’m hungry for God and all I want is more!!!!!
Thank you for opening my eyes Pastor Eddie I cant wait for what’s to come.
I love this class! I have learned so much more about how to be an effective and successful leader not only in the church but also in life. I went into this class thinking that you either are a “natural born” leader or you are not. Though this class I have learned that in order to be the best leader possible, you have to constantly be refining yourself. In this class I have become aware through the teaching that as people we go through a certain cycle that we are not always “conscious” about. If we are aware of the specific cycle Pastor Eddie teaches about and do the necessary learning that we need we will be made better. The cycles that we go through will become easier and shorter as we grow.
Assignment from the last Leaders class: What areas of my life have I experienced favor from god?
1) He kept me from death by my husband’s hands many times over for many years, at the time I was married.
2) He put people and positions in my path to allow me to succeed in life the 20 years following my husband’s death, building my confidence and increasing my abilities.
3) He called me to Africa and carried me every day; guiding and directing me; giving me supernatural wisdom; keeping me safe from all harm; keeping me healthy and disease-free daily; and equipping me with every thing and every word I needed to complete my mission. He’s showing me favor right now, upon my return, with the right church (CLC), the right pastor(s) (Eddie), and the right classes to insure my success in my new calling of fundraising.
Assignment from last Leaders class: What areas of my life do I see as gifted?
1) I have a gift for Teaching/Leadership. I’ve been a sales trainer/teacher/mentor many years and a sales manager with up to 58 people under my supervision/management.
2) I have a gift of Intercession.
3) I have a gift of Helps and Faith. I love living a life of servanthood both in and away from church. I have undying and unshatterable Faith.
I’ve taken a handful of leadership classes during my school years and found similar or common themes woven within each one. They each helped you recognize where you were at as a leader, what kind you currently were, where you actually wanted to be and what tools it would take for you to get there!
Yeah, this class was NOTHING like any of these “leadership” classes I’ve ever taken. Not that my previous knowledge wasn’t helpful, it was just a small foundational/basic piece toward a bigger picture!
I sometimes love to “people watch” and I often wonder what makes some people more motivated to go above and beyond the next person. Or why this person strives for excellence and a next level, while their neighbor is content with where they are at and comfortable with living every area of their life in mediocrity. Now, I’m not saying I got all the answers out of this class, but Pastor’s thoughts of Competent vs. Incompetent revolutionized my thinking on many of these questions! It’s in this class my thought processes was challenged and my perspective on how I serve the body of Christ was shifted! Pastor not only gives you tools to becoming a better leader, but he also challenges your thinking on becoming a more effective YOU all-around!
Pastor so simply broke down our mindset toward any area of our life, into 4 different categories. This instantly created a mirror toward myself in order to exam where I fell on this wheel! But, at the end of the day it doesn’t matter where you found yourself, because all that really matters is that once you discover where you are…the question now is what are you going to do about it? Will you choose to stay incompetent (because you feel it’s easier), or are you going to strive to push ahead for that next level you were created to live in!
Bottom line…it’s just like Pastor says, “In order to go there you must GROW there!”
I hope you too decide to grow with Champion Life Church, by taking this life changing class!
